‘A sad tale’s best for winter…’ – Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale

In the years leading up to WW1 Montague Rhodes James – pioneering medievalist, sometime Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and writer of the best supernatural tales in the English language – established a tradition of reading a new ghost story to his friends in King’s College every Christmas Eve, just after chapel. These unforgettably eerie tales are still justly celebrated today. But only one of them is actually set during the Christmas season: “The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance.”

Come and listen to this lesser known – and still more rarely heard – masterpiece read by Robert Lloyd Parry of Nunkie Productions at the Cambridge Museum of Technology. It will be accompanied by a glass of wine and a reading of “A Collector’s Company,” a spine chiller written by one of James’s regular guests at his ghost story evenings – The Rev R H Malden.

We have a small number of parking spots for disabled visitors. Please email info@museumoftechnology.com to book one. Unfortunately, there is no other car parking on site, but there is free street parking in the area. There is room for plenty of bicycles on site.

There will be a cash bar selling beer, wine, and soft drinks.
