“To the Balkans and beyond”

An illustrated history of a 1947 AEC Regent Mk 2 Double-decker bus

Given by Ian Jack

This bus enjoyed 15 years’ service with Reading Corporation Transport before being purchased by A&C McLennan of Spittalfield near Perth in 1963.

Ian (then a student at St.Andrews) bought it for £200 in 1968, adding cooking, sleeping and hot water facilities, and drove it with around 15 others through Europe including “Iron Curtain” countries, to Istanbul and back. There is a glimpse here of what the 1963 Cliff Richards film “Summer Holiday” might have looked like without any backup team and camera crew.

Subsequently Ian took it to Belgium and sold it to be entered as a float in the 1969 Mardi Gras festival at Aalst, with the theme “Nachtbar Lunbus”.  It took first prize.

Ian’s talk will include these and other pictures:

The event is free to enter (though donations welcomed!) and will take place in the Pye Building - no booking required!
