This model 222 radio was an important early radio made by Pye Radio Ltd. in 1926. Pye was a Cambridge company started by William George Pye in 1896. Originally an instrument manufacturing company, Pye expanded into many fields and became particularly famous for its radios. This radio is a two-valve, battery receiver with plug-in coils and porcelain holders. It doesn’t have an integral loudspeaker because it was designed to be used with a external horn speaker. It originally sold for £6.18s.0d. A year later, Pye lowered the price and the model became known as the ‘Popular Two’.
