Alastair Lawson, the Chairman and webmaster of the Airship Heritage Trust, joins us to explore a fascinating piece of aviation heritage. He will look at the origins and history behind the Imperial Airship Scheme in the 1920s and take us on a virtual tour around the gigantic HMA R.101.  At 777ft (almost 237 meters) it was at the time the largest object every flown. In comparison, the Museum’s tall chimney is only 180ft!

Alastair’s interest in airships was kindled when he was a teenager and saw the Airship Industries Skyships fly over his house. He has been involved with the Airship Heritage Trust for over 30 years, archiving, scanning and sharing the history of airships.

The Airship Heritage Trust was set up in 1985 by a group of dedicated enthusiasts and relatives of the original crew members. The archive, which covers airships, sheds and people, can be accessed here www.airshipsonline.com
