Our new season of talks launches on 14th September with a presentation by Alan Denney on the Ash Railway at the Cheddars Lane pumping station.  

The Museum is based on the pumping station site which was once the centre of waste management in Cambridge, handling the town’s sewage and rubbish. The Ash Railway, which will celebrate its 99th anniversary this September, formed an important part of the operations.  Alan’s illustrated talk will give us a brief introduction to waste disposal in Victorian Cambridge and then explore in detail the history of the Ash Railway and the work of Museum volunteers to reconstruct the equipment and bring it back to life.  

Alan Denney has volunteered at Cambridge Museum of Technology since the 1970s. In this time he has carried out extensive research on the history and operation of the  site,  in archives, libraries and also talking to former workers at the Pumping Station.  

This (in-person) event will take place in the Pye Building at Cambridge Museum of Technology.  Entrance to the venue on the night is via the Museum’s upper gate on Cheddars Lane.  

There will be free light refreshments courtesy of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMECHE) 

Tickets for the event will be available on the door for £5 (£3 for students with ID).
Card-carrying members and volunteers of Cambridge Museum of Technology can attend for free.
